“Tales From The Strypt”

With an infamous past that reaches back to the 1920s, The Sunset Strip is no stranger to scandalous and tragic events. From illegal “rum running” during prohibition, to a mob haven during the 1940s, and later the deaths of acting legends John Belushi and River Phoenix, many events have left an indelible mark on the landmark buildings that line the notorious stretch of boulevard.

To quote Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece, The Shining, “some places are like people. Some ‘shine’ and some don’t…When something happens, you can leave a trace of itself behind. Say like, if someone burns toast. Well, maybe things that happen leave other kinds of traces behind.”

With these eerie thoughts in mind, three Sunset Strip staples share their experiences of spine tingling ghostly encounters…

The Comedy Store Unleashes Its Ghostly Past

Opening its doors in 1940, Ciro’s nightclub was the original Sunset Strip hotspot for the who’s who of Tinseltown. Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Cary Grant, Joan Crawford and notorious members of the mob were among those who performed and played here.

So with 70-plus years of storied history – as well as some illicit scandal from the mob days – under its belt, it should be no surprise that the building that now houses the world famous Comedy Store is considered one of the most haunted landmarks in Los Angeles.

On Oct. 8, The Store kicked off a month-long series paying tribute to its specters in residence with “Haunted Midnights.”  Part history lesson, part tour and all laughs, the night had a great balance of spooky Sunset Strip lore and comedic performance.
