Rumors have been swirling for weeks leading up to Tony Clifton’s return to the stage. Since arriving in town for rehearsals, the self-proclaimed international singing sensation has been hitting The Sunset Strip and causing a raucous wherever he appears.

In support of his week-long residency at The Comedy Store, Clifton and his entourage besieged the Viper Room last week, after ceremoniously being turned away at nightspot Voyeur. Clifton and crew have also been chatting up a storm on Twitter and other social networking sites, hyping the show with outrageous claims and boasts about possible guest appearances. After the “incident” at Voyeur, Clifton’s online PR campaign even urged fans to call the club and make a stink.

This media blitz of controversy is true to form for the character originally created by comic legend Andy Kaufman. Point being, the public never knows what is real and what is part of the act.

Pulling off mass scale gags like this definitely gets people talking. Waiting in line for the sold-out show, the audience was buzzing with questions, exchanging hearsay and further fueling the rumor mill. Once inside, it was clear that the show was going to be something special. The Comedy Store stage was transformed into a Vegas-style lounge complete with a bandstand and Tony Clifon’s name in lights.

Once the show began, it took the audience a few beats to adjust to Clifton’s outlandish one liners. Touching on every taboo from ethnic jokes to incest, the crowd reaction slowly ramped up from church giggles to outright roaring laughter.

Interlacing comedy, burlesque dancers and musical numbers, Clifton and his Katrina Kiss-My-Ass orchestra performed a three-hour plus set, which turned into an endurance contest with the audience — a kind of comic technique pioneered by Kaufman, that actually attempts to drive the audience out of the room.

The lengthy variety show was so unique and different that it almost lived up to its own self-generated hype. Celebs like Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) and Dennis Hof, with his working girls from HBO’s “Cat House,” were in attendance to catch the 25th anniversary performance of the man who started the Comic Relief organization, which benefits those in need.

A show that includes marionettes, on stage pubic hair shaving and a graphic montage of Tiger Wood’s mistress is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. Don’t miss it!

Tony Clifton performs at The Comedy Store May 19-21. Doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets are $20.  www.thecomedystore.com
