Construction Update: March 2-8

During work hours (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) lanes will be reduced to one travel lane in the eastbound and one travel lane in the westbound direction. At the end of the day lanes will be reopened to two lanes of traffic in each direction.

Please remember that all businesses will be open during their normal business hours, and we encourage you to support your local businesses during construction.

During the weekday work hours, crews will continue grinding of the pavement. The old concrete is creating a lot of dust, so in an effort to combat this the sweepers are constantly running. The crews cannot use water to control the dust, because it turns into mud which will be tracked by cars along the boulevard and get into the storm drains that go directly to the ocean.

Paving will also start this week. This is the base course or bottom layer of paving. In a couple of weeks the final cap will be paved using the rubberized asphalt. Rubberized asphalt is made up of recycled car tires that would otherwise go to landfills.

One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction during the grinding and paving operation. The roadway resumes to two lanes of traffic in each direction at the end of the day.

This week the contractor is continuing to work on replacing damaged sidewalks, driveways and corner ramps in various locations. Any affected driveways will have steel plates installed to allow for access.

Some other important news to note regarding the construction project:

JOBS:
It is important to recognize that as of March 1, 2010, this project has created or saved 77 jobs in just about seven weeks of construction. Part of the project is funded through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 which included funding for project like ours that invests in our infrastructure and creates and/or saves jobs.

ACADEMY AWARDS:
As they say the show must go on, and it will. The Academy Awards is scheduled for this Sunday, March 7. In preparation, this Friday the contractor will not start any new work, instead finishing up the work for the week and cleaning. This will allow for the post-show parties on Sunset Boulevard to go on.

Also a reminder that Hollywood Boulevard at Highland in the City of Los Angeles is closed due to the Academy Awards, this will affect traffic throughout the region.

LOS ANGELES MARATHON:
Also of note, just around the corner is the Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday, March 21. Mile markers 13-14, including the all important halfway point at 13.1 miles, occurs on The Sunset Strip. Weather permitting we are still on schedule to have our first section of Sunset Boulevard paved for the marathon. The Los Angeles Marathon reports that more than 20,000 runners have already registered for the marathon and expect to reach their cap of 25,000 runners.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during the construction and temporary lane closures.
