Legendary Sunset Strip haunt the Hyatt West Hollywood unveiled a revamped look and a new name on January 8, when the hotel reopened as the Andaz West Hollywood. A boutique hotel brand from Hyatt, the Andaz West Hollywood has completely re-imagined the 14-story former Hyatt on Sunset, or as it was know in its rock and roll heyday, the “Riot House.”

While guests may still find subtle hints of its heritage from its earlier days, the new hotel focuses on unique details and the special locale of West Hollywood. Andaz hired New York based architecture and interior design firm Janson Goldstein who developed the many facets of the hotel.

“Our mission has been to make each [Andaz] property unique to the surrounding area,” says Janson Goldstein principal Hal Goldstein. “We highlight both the contrasts between the modern and the mid-century, as well as to offer transparency. We break down barriers between inside and outside space.”

January 8 also marked the opening of the highly anticipated RH restaurant (a play on the hotel’s “Riot House” nickname).

“It’s an integral part of this neighborhood,” says Andaz General Manager Michel Morauw. “The public desire to pay homage to the hotel’s history while setting our sights on the future was simply overwhelming. RH is a wink at the past and a new story to write. RH is about simple elegance, freshness and conviviality.”

While its name may recall images of the property’s colorful rock and roll past, RH’s new incarnation is as a smart yet informal neighborhood restaurant. French-trained Chef Sebastien Archambault leads the culinary team as executive chef of RH and has created a fresh spin on the “market to table” concept with local vendors and growers, which focuses on regional, seasonal ingredients and personal choice. In addition to a menu of signature dishes, the restaurant offers a market list.

Guests will be able to choose items off this list and customize their own dinner. The restaurant also showcases local wines inspired by boutique vintners celebrating the best of California. In the spirit of openness and transparency that marks the style of RH, Archambault and his team will work in a kitchen completely open to the 100-seat bar and restaurant. The walk-in coolers feature glass doors so guests can observe their entire meal taking shape from storage and preparation to cooking and plating. The unique market menu will highlight Los Angeles’ climate and richness; “We give new meaning to the concept of honest food,” Archambault says.

“Our staff is perfecting the techniques to function within the space so that our guests experience the maximum comfort and service Andaz permits,” noted Morauw. “We look forward to welcoming our first guests and the community to Andaz.”
