The Sunset Strip Beautification Project continues to make progress daily and gets closer to The Strip becoming a lean, mean driving (and walking) machine. This week crews will continue to work on replacing bus pads and cleaning and repairing the sidewalks.

Araki: A Perspective @ PRISM Gallery

Araki: A Perspective @ PRISM Gallery

Sure, you know about The Sunset Strip’s rock and roll history and nightlife, but what you may not be so familiar with is the burgeoning art scene on this legendary boulevard.

Prism gallery, housed in a dramatic three-story architectural space near Sunset Plaza, has carved a new niche for the arts and boasts unique and thought-provoking exhibits. Its inaugural showcase highlighted the works of street artists Philip Frost and Barry McGee, and caught the eyes and attention of local and national art critics.

The gallery’s current exhibit showcases the work of one of Japan’s most notable photographers, Nobuyoshi Araki. Boasting more than 450 photography books to his name, Araki’s work has garnered international acclaim and stirred up controversy around the world. He explores a wide variety of topics, most notably the love of his wife.

Melissa Auf der Maur @ The Viper Room

In the age following the collapse of the major label structure, many formerly signed artists have suddenly been thrust into a precarious Darwinian nightmare. Adrift in an unfamiliar, sink or swim scenario, the business savvy few have embraced their new found freedom and utilized their time to regroup and reassess their career path.

With the release of her second solo record Out Of Our Minds, Melissa Auf der Maur, former bassist for Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins, has taken this challenge head on with a large scale multimedia release and web marketing assault.

Construction Update: April 6-12

The Beautification Project continues to move forward with sidewalk work, striping, traffic loop installation, landscaping and bus pad construction prep. Crews will begin prepping rotating lane closures during the next two weeks as the remaining bus pads on Sunset Boulevard will be constructed. While the concrete for the bus pads is hardening, no cars can drive on the road. Traffic will be reduced down to one lane in that direction, 24 hours a day for the entire work week.

The City is constructing all bus pads in the same direction during the same week to mitigate the impact to the community. The City also made adjustments to have concrete harden faster to allow for traffic to drive on it sooner. The lanes are expected to be reopened to traffic at the end of each week.
