The Beautification Project continues to move forward with sidewalk work, striping, traffic loop installation, landscaping and bus pad construction prep. Crews will begin prepping rotating lane closures during the next two weeks as the remaining bus pads on Sunset Boulevard will be constructed. While the concrete for the bus pads is hardening, no cars can drive on the road. Traffic will be reduced down to one lane in that direction, 24 hours a day for the entire work week.

The City is constructing all bus pads in the same direction during the same week to mitigate the impact to the community. The City also made adjustments to have concrete harden faster to allow for traffic to drive on it sooner. The lanes are expected to be reopened to traffic at the end of each week.

WESTBOUND DIRECTION: APRIL 12-16, Monday – Friday
Bus pads will be constructed at the following four intersections with Sunset Boulevard: 1. Doheny Drive; 2. Doheny Road/Cory Avenue; 3. Clark Street/San Vicente Avenue ; 4. Sunset Plaza Drive; all on the north side of the street.

EASTBOUND DIRECTION: APRIL 19-23, Monday – Friday
Bus pads will be constructed at the following five intersections with Sunset Boulevard: 1. Doheny Drive; 2. Doheny Road/Cory Avenue; 3. Hammond Street; 4.Clark Street/San Vicente Avenue; 5. Holloway Drive/Horn Avenue/Palm Avenue; all on the south side of the street.

Although you should expect traffic delays during this time, please remember that all businesses are open during normal business hours.

This week the traffic striping that was delayed due to rains will continue to be installed on the recently paved area between Harper Avenue and Alta Loma Road. The work will be done at night when traffic volumes are light. They will work only on Sunday to Thursday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The City’s inspector will be on site during the installation.

Following the striping, the traffic loops will be installed into the pavement. Traffic loops that sense vehicles and bicycles in the roadway, tell the traffic signal equipment that someone is waiting at a traffic signal. This work continues from last week. Also other electrical work is being done to get the traffic signals ready for the new computer equipment to be installed.

The various utility companies are continuing to adjust their manhole access covers and valves to the newly paved street. Several have completed their work and others are working this week to complete their work. Unrelated to the Sunset project, Southern California Edison will be working at night on April 6, 7, 8 and 12 on their cable and switch replacement program. This will involve pulling cables from vaults in the roadway on Sunset and replacing switches in vaults.

The saw cutting of sidewalk continues in the second phase of construction. They will start to work in the next phase of construction which includes the area between Alta Loma Road to San Vicente Boulevard. No excavation of sidewalk in the phase II area, just saw cuts to get ready for the concrete removal.

The project also includes pressure washing the sidewalks, which will be done at night/early morning from 3 to 9 a.m. when the sidewalks are not utilized. The pressure washing will be done block by block for the next two weeks. During the daytime they will be scraping gum off the sidewalks.
The tree relocations and tree grate installations for the area between Harper and Alta Loma continues on The Sunset Strip. Most of these are replanting of palm trees in the palm tree district and completing the flowering trees at the east entrance to The Sunset Strip.

Pending coordination with Sunset Plaza, the contractor may start removing the median islands in the Sunset Plaza area sometime late this week or early next week. This will facilitate the construction of the new public sidewalks in the area and keep the lanes open during construction.

It is also important to recognize that as of April 1, 2010, this project has created or saved 129 jobs. Part of the project is funded through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 which included funding for projects like ours that invests in our infrastructure and creates and/or saves jobs.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during the construction and temporary lane closures. Remember to support local businesses during construction!
