Mel’s Drive-In Hosting Art Show With GuitarTown Artist Juliana Martinez

Philanthropy meets artistry this June 30, when Mel’s Drive-In hosts an art exhibition featuring work from Gibson GuitarTown artist Juliana Martinez. The evening will feature a collection of her tiled, mosiac furniture from 6 – 10 p.m.
Martinez was commissioned to create two 10-foot-tall art guitars for the public art project Gibson GuitarTown on The Sunset Strip over the last two years. The first, which has since been auctioned off for charity, stood in front of The Standard hotel and celebrated the peace and love movement of the 1960s. The second, titled "There’s Something Happening Here" in honor of iconic band Buffalo Springfield, is boldly displayed at the Mel’s Drive-In entrance.

Last week some of The Sunset Strip’s most innovative up-and-coming talents explored the newly opened Pink Taco to sample their delectable Mexican fare and thirst quenching blended libations.  The bands: I Will Never Be The Same (photo 2), Battle Tapes (photo 3), and ROMS (photo 4), are all part of a newly rebirthed electro/industrial/dark wave scene that seems to be thriving amidst the recent mainstream success of bands like M83, and the always evolving and ever relevant Trent Reznor (NIN).

Buckle Up: Tony Clifton Has Landed At The Comedy Store

Buckle Up: Tony Clifton Has Landed At The Comedy Store

Twenty-eight years after the mysterious disappearance of comic legend Andy Kaufman, his alter ego, “international singing sensation” Tony Clifton, continues to bring inappropriate and uncomfortable laughter to the off-color humor loving masses at The Comedy Store.

Complete with a full band, marionettes, and a “hooker raffle,” the adults-only variety show is like nothing you’ve ever seen or experienced before, which is probably why it’s been attracting big crowds as word has spread about the over-the-top antics of The Tony Clifton Revue. Between trips to the bar to refresh his drink, and carousing with his clothing optional cohorts, we were able to catch the comic legend, as he “let it all hang out,” expounding on the finer points of living a life of leisure.
